Tips for Session Development

Title

  • A creative, effective, short description of the objectives and session content.
  • Limited to 10 words or less.

 

Objectives

  • Provide up to three objectives describing the outcomes resulting from the presentation.
  • A learning objective should complete the following statement with an observable and measurable verb:
         After this presentation, the attendee will be able to …
  • The following verbs should NOT be used when writing learning objectives: know, learn, grasp, enhance, understand, appreciate and improve.

 

Session Outline

  • Briefly describing each speaker's topic as it relates to the session's objectives, including teaching methods.
  • Highlight any new and/or significant contributions and/or cutting-edge information to the profession.
  • Include any unique audiovisual or special equipment in this outline.

 

Presentation Formats

  • Option 1: 60-minute educational session
    1. 5 minutes of introduction,
    2. Maximum of one speaker, 40 minutes,
    3. Mandatory 10 to 15 minutes for interaction and Q&A.
  • Option 2: 90-minute educational session
    1. 5 minutes of introductions,
    2. Either one speaker, 60 minutes OR two speakers, 30 to 40 minutes each,
    3. Mandatory 10 to 15 minutes for interaction and Q&A.

 

Presentation Style

  • FNCE rooms have a minimum of 500 seats available per session set in theater style.
  • Consider demonstrations, debate, consensus generation, issue identification, case presentations, interactive activities or lecture for the presentation format.
  • It is highly recommended that sessions involve a structured, interactive format.

 

Description

  • A two to three sentence focus statement explaining the session content and rationale for the presentation to conference attendees.
  • This statement may be used in promotional materials that describe the session and should be reflective of the previously stated objectives.

 

Biographical Sketch

  • Program planner must include a biographical sketch on the online form for each speaker highlighting accomplishments, publications, research, work experience and presentations within the last two years. Current contact information for each speaker must also be provided.
  • In addition, the program planner will be sent instructions on how to email a one page bio, CV or resume for each speaker after submitting their session proposal.
