Position and Practice Papers

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics develops Position and Practice Papers to assist in promoting the public's optimal nutrition, health, and well-being. Both position and practice papers are germane to the Academy's vision, mission, values, goals, and strategies. The Academy also participates in developing joint position papers with other professional associations in addition to adopting positions put forth by other professional associations. Position and practice papers are written by health professionals who possess thorough and current knowledge of the topic.

What is an Academy Position Paper?

A position paper is a critical analysis of current facts, data, and research literature. A key feature of the paper is the position statement, which presents the Academy's stance on an issue. The Academy and its members, other professional associations, government agencies, and industry use position papers to shape food choices and impact the public's nutritional status. Position papers are available to Academy members, health professionals, and the public on the Academy's website at no charge and are published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

What is an Academy Practice Paper?

A practice paper is a critical analysis of the current research literature that addresses a practice topic to translate science to practice. It provides registered dietitians (RDs) and dietetic technicians, registered, (DTRs) with information to enhance critical reasoning and quality improvement in dietetics practice. Practice papers are available on the Academy's website at no charge to Academy members, an important member benefit. Practice paper abstracts are published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Utilizing Academy Position and Practice Papers

The Academy authorizes republication of position papers in their entirety provided full and proper credit is given. Permission is given for readers to share, forward, copy and/or distribute position and practice papers (in their entirety) providing such distribution is not used to indicate an endorsement of a product or service. Commercial distribution is not permitted without the permission of the Academy. Requests to use portions of a paper or requests for hard copies of a paper may be requested by e-mailing your name, address and position title to ppapers@eatright.org.

Authoring Academy Position and Practice Papers

Position and practice papers are written by health professionals who possess thorough and current knowledge of the topic. Qualified authors, reviewers of the draft papers and content advisors must submit an application and disclose any duality of interest prior to being selected to work on a new or existing position.
